END OF MODULE SELF EVALUATION

END OF MODULE SELF EVALUATION

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I think I've developed a better understanding of illustrator, this helped me throughout the module, especially alphabet soup. I think i have developed a better understanding of type, type & colour. I think this helped the most with my message & delivery posters.

2.What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I have approached a variety of skills & methods throughout this module. I think drawing final work before executing it digitally helped. Its not one of my strengths sketching ideas but for alphabet soup i defiantly helped.

3.What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think one of my main strengths would definitely be time management. I'd like to believe my blog is pretty much always up to date. I think if i left anything longer than two days to blog i worry about it. I think thats just my style of working and its proven beneficial at the end of the module.

4.What Weaknessess can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I think a big weakness of mine would be not producing enough developement work for briefs. I think i come up with a strong idea and stick to it i think this could be a downfall as i might miss a better concept to go with.

5.Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
  • Feedback i receive for my work in crits i will definitely adjust them straight away i accept and appreciate criticism as it helps the final outcome to be as good as it can be.
  • I will use photoshop more than i do at the moment simply because I'm confident with illustrator and theres still room for improvement with my photoshop skills.
  • I will make sure i develop my ideas further throughout briefs just to make sure my ideas are in detail as possible.
  • I will make sure i label all my blog posts with the correct module code. I think i had missed a few from this module and had to go back through and label them.
  • Although i think my time management for blogging is really good, I think making sure i take lots of screen shots throughout development of work just to help show what I'm talking about.

Message&Delivery Mail Shot 0UGD403

MESSAGE&DELIVERY - Mail shot

Produce a mail shot that distributes, disseminates and reinforces your message to an appropriate list of recipients.Your resoulution should fit within envelope provided and be accompanied by a visually appropriate mailing list.

Mandatory Requirements - Your design should be for 2 colour(+stock)
Deliverables - 5 editions of your resolution ( 1 to be sent via post as directed) 1x graphically/visually appropriate mailing list.

For my mail shot I'm going to recreate my image and type poster for my mail shot. featuring pop up stick man to represent my statistic.

I created numerous sketches to support and help me develop my initial idea. I knew i wanted to have a keyboard for my envelope to represent cyber bullying.
I first began by creating a envelope on illustrator the dimensions i used were 22width 11height i created the flaps to close the envelope , i wanted the main flap that covers the envelope the same size as the main envelope front. The back will feature the envelope.

I found a qwerty keyboard on google images and made my own replica of it , I used illustrator to mock up the same squares and began filling it in with letters , numbers and gylphs.

I used the same font as i used for my poster , its a typewriter style font called Typenoksidi.I found it on a font website. i filled out my keyboard with the font. I wanted the word cyber to be coloured in red , were they were originally positioned on the board, but when i tested it you could really make out what the word was. so i decided to go for two words and have them on two different lines with the other letters from the alphabet surrounding them. I tried not to repeat any letters with the exception of the the 'L' in the word bullying.

Once i had filled the keyboard style grid with my letters and keyboard shortcuts i made placed it on top of my envelope which i had previously made black to work along side my original posters. I put the words cyber  bullying in red for affect and so they were legible along side the white letters.

When getting to the part of adding in the glyphs i didn't realise previously but the type i had chosen to do my original posters and my mail slot didn't actually have glyphs as part of its set. I went onto another font website and found a similar font and used them from that. I think they look as part of a set with the rest of the keyboard.

The inside of my envelope:-

When beginning the inside of my poster i wanted to do a simple but affective flyer using most of the information used on my original message and delivery posters. I created a simple poster with a statistic on and i wanted to have this poster with similar dimensions as my envelope having it folding slightly in the middle and creating a pop up stick man.
I loved this idea but trying to execute it in a short space of time was proven harder than i thought , the way i wanted to do it was harder than i expected. After looking at two books from the library and having a play around i tried a different approach for my flyer.

I definitely wanted to incorporate the stick men into my flyer as they were the main idea behind my message and delivery posters. I created five red stickmen and five white stickmen (one for each recipient) i put these on two a3 documents. They would be printed double sided and put inside of the envelope.

I typed ' PICK ON SOMEONE YOUR OWN SIZE' & '1 IN 3 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE RECEIVED CYBER THREATS ONLINE' on either side. I wanted to do this idea because even though topic is really serious its a playful way of getting the message across with little stickmen. I also believe it gets the message across simply and efficiently.

The stock i used was antique paper. It was as white as i would of liked but i wanted the paper to be thicker than usually white stock. The printer i used wasn't printing out the red i wanted and it was coming out quite pixilated.
Where as the type i wanted in red was working so i decided to have just the outline in red i still think it worked really well. It was also a plus trying to print the men out double sided i just made sure one side of the paper was completely filled out and the text was positioned in the right place so i could easily cut out the men without the worry the other side wasn't in line.

I next cut out the men using scissors as i felt a craft knife would be more difficult to cut around the heads of the men. I cut each man out and put them into each envelope. For the envelopes them selfs i cut the excess from the a3 page and scored down the white lines to fold the edges over - another alteration i made before printing the envelope was using the template for the right had tab and filling it with the text from the keyboard so when it was folded at the end it would over lap and match the keyboard.

For the mailing list i wanted to send it to youth clubs and schools in leeds as my age group was for teenagers and young adults. I searched the internet for local schools colleges and teenage youth clubs. I used the same text for my mailing list as i did for my full message & delivery brief.

Message & Delivery posters- HOW I DID IT OUGD403

Message&Delivery
Brief: Produce designs for a set of three high impact posters that deliver a personal identfied message delivers from your research into part one of this brief. The three posters should work as a set or series and be visually consistent. The first must be producded solely using type, the second solely with image and the third combination of both type and image.

Mandatory Requirements / Deliverables:
Each poster should be supported by comprehensive visual research into frame format and composition and content. You are restricted to the use of two colours plus stock.Three posters 2:1 format presented at A3 scale.

Before creating the posters we had to choose a story from a newspaper. I chose the Adele scandal where the singer was abused via twitter and sent awful threats. After further research i wanted to go down the route of bullying.

I began going searching existing posters and found that there wasn't much i could relate to for my subject. I love using monochrome and found that would best suit my posters along with red to give the impression of danger (bully).

Before we started our posters we had to create 20 initial ideas for each poster 20 for type , type&image and image.

These initial ideas helped to to come up with our final idea. For our A3 2:1 posters.

The first poster i created was the type poster:-

I found a typewriter font off the internet which i found appropriate. I wanted the text to say ' PICK ON SOMEONE YOUR OWN SIZE' as i felt it had impact.

I traced the type and ungrouped it in illustrator i aligned the type along the left hand side of the poster. I wanted then to be aligned down the left because i wanted it to be different from other posters and i find it more visually aesthetic.I also changed the last three words to red for impact.

After looking at my first poster for a short vile i decided it wasn't working for me and it didn't look how i wanted it to . I decide to try the reverse of the font i had traced and use the cropped box and the missing text as a template and place it on top of the black background i found that this was the best option.I wanted to incorporate ransom note letters to give the impression of bullying. I didn't want it to look to obvious so i kept the letters joined up i think it works really well. I placed a red line across the top of the poster which i will place on each poster this well help to unite them.
The second poster i created was the image poster:-

I created a stickman and decided on the colour red to emphasise a bully and anger i made the stickman really large and brought to the front , i wanted to have the stickman bleeding off the page , just because i didn't want it to be central and obvious.

I positioned the smaller stickman who i was trying to create as the person who is being bullied, to the right hand side and really small , almost as though the stickman was further back and scared. Although this poster is so simple i think it works and gets the point across it shows a bully and a victim.

The last poster i created was the type & image:-

For this poster i wanted to have some information for people to understand more about the subject at hand and some real facts. I chose the statistic of '1 in 3 in  young people have experience cyber threats online' I think that its quite a lot -1 in 3 so i felt it was appropriate. I used the same font as i did for the first poster but i used the inverse of the trace instead of the outside. Even though its different you can still tell its the same font.

I wanted to incorporate size in this poster because i had used a size theme to the other to posters but i found it really hard to put type with an image. I wanted to have a fact on the poster and i couldn't find a size related statistic. So i decide to use stick men to represent the ratio for the statistic itself.

I was really pleased with the poster although it doesn't show size. It shows a fact image and type all my posters work as a set.

Print Workshop Vernon street

Print Workshop - Vernon Street
Our group had a print workshop at the Vernon street campus. We took part in 3 different workshops.
  • Lino printing
  • Letter press
  • Mono printing

Lino Printing
For the lino print workshop we used one of the letters we create for a previous studio brief. My letter represented  the word boom. I chose to do the letter V because i thought it would take an interesting lino print. I first used green chalk and pressed my letter onto a piece of lino to create a print. I then went over the trace in pencil , then in pen to make it easier to see.

With lino what ever you cut out it will print the opposite , so i cut out the inside of the letter V , using a lino cutter . Cutting away and up pressing against a wooden block incase i was to slip.
I finally covered the lino in black ink back and forth a few times to make sure it was fully covered and placed it on to the centre of an A3 piece of paper i then put another piece of paper on top , a cloth and then i rolled it under the mechanical press and pushed down the large metal square to get my print. I repeated this process with the same lino to achieve a faded edition of my letter.

Letter press

For the letter press we could choose any word we wanted just so we could have a go of using wood block letters , We had to large boxes full of wooden letters and there was also a large wooden cabinet full of other size and shaped letters. I picked a selected of random letters and inked them up the same way as the lino. Once i printed them i found it didn't really look very good with a different letter R . So i picked similar letters and repeated the process.
If to much ink is applied to the letters it creates bubbles and they print on to the paper and  this makes some of the letters distorted. When finishing with the wooden blocks we used old rags and oil to wipe off the ink and then dry tissue paper and a soapy water spray. This resolves any ink been left on them for the next people to use them.

Mono Printing

Before creating my mono print i drew a shape onto some white card using a ruler and pencil and cut it out using a craft knife. I had to use card as i was about to put ink on to it and paper would of rolled up and not been strong enough to hold a lot of ink.
I used the same machine as when i did lino print , after inking my triangle with a roller , i placed it on to the paper , then put another piece of paper on top , a cloth and then i rolled it under the mechanical press and pushed down the large metal square to get my print. I repeated the process with another cut out shape of a triangle to get lots of different variations. Mono printing was my favourite.

typeface for the word BOOM OUGD403

Alphabet Soup - Creating the type face

For our brief alphabet soup , we had to choose one of our letters from the 10 we created and make a typeface. I chose the letter V i had created from my set. My word was boom my idea behind this was to create the letters to look as though they were all broken and it was what was left after an explosion. I began recreating the letters...
I began by using the letter V and using the pencil tool to create wave lengths across it. I then changed the stroke to create thickness it looked slightly similar to the letter i have scanned in but not as distorted and broken up as i wanted.

I Began using the pen tool to create similar like shapes from the letter V. I created a square and placed these shapes in. This is for when i come to create the other letters in the alphabet i can place a blank letter on top.
I started duplicating some shapes i had created to fill in the square as much as possible and changed the colour of the shapes to black fill.

I created the letter A in a text box i selected it and right clicked and created outlines this makes it a shape! I then placed it on top of the black shapes i created with the pen tool.

OBJECT > CLIPPING MASK > MAKE

Making sure the blank letter and the shapes in the back ground are all selected!

I repeated the process with each letter in the alphabet so i achieved this broken up letter. I did a version without a stroke..

I edited the type and put a stroke of 1pt on i found this works a lot better than the above, and looks a lot bolder.

I enjoyed creating this type. Before last weeks illustrator workshop i wasn't very confident using the pen tool but after practising i managed to successfully make some shapes that looked like the pattern i had previously hand drawn for my letter. Although this type isn't exactly like my letter it has the same affect and i am pleased how it turned out. I tried placing the letters over different sections of the square i had made so each letter wasn't the same. If i was to do this again i would make sure i had left a little bit more negative space so the letters weren't as black.

Further Development & Final Typeface.

I liked the typeface i had done but felt that it wasn't enough for the final outcome. I think the reason was because it didn't take very long to do as once i had created the individual shapes it was just a case of making clipping masks  using the letters.Although my original letter i am using to re-create a typeface from is simple i still felt the typeface i had created was really plain.

I decided to change the typeface:-

I found this typeface on a font website , its called ' Boom Tank' I wanted the outsides of my letters to be ruff and not straight. I next thought i would try and add more shapes to the original square of shapes i had made to make the clipping masks from. Just to make it a bit more complex.

I began by taking the strokes off the shapes so they were just black shapes instead. I then duplicated some of the shapes.
I tested a letter on the shapes and felt it appropriate to keep some shapes with fill on.

I began putting them on to a document repeating the same process.

When finishing my typeface i added in a few glyphs so that there would be 4 characters on each line. I changed the type to blue.
Although i thought the type looked really good in blue i felt it was in appropriate for the word 'boom' and i felt yellow would work better to incorporate explosion . After testing the yellow it didn't work very well and the white strokes on the shapes inside the letters stood out a lot more in black.

My finished type face-
