Module Evaluation

MODULE EVALUATION

1 What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I think I have developed the ability to try new things. I was really interested in producing an installation although the experience was tedious and stressful It helped me to widen my ability to work with new materials. I have also developed the skills to create stronger concepts instead of going with the first idea I get. I have learnt to take a step back from my work and analyse what I am doing and where I want it to go.

2  What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Trying new production methods such as 3d design also trying new binding methods such as wire bind. This really helped my studio brief 1 as I was unsure of the initial outcome I tested a prototype which worked really well this also prevented me from making spelling mistakes or any print errors. I have definitely used Photoshop a lot through this module I feel I am getting better at using it. Photography definitely had a big part in my design production, as I needed to practice to take the best images possible.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Strength of mine throughout the module would be taking the time to experiment and produce mock-ups before creating the final piece. Also making sure I document my work more than I have in the past by taking more images, this has helped benefit me as I could see my project developing as It went on.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

A weakness of mine would be not setting aside enough time as a I would of liked and I would of liked to produce more proposed deliverables to help my work be more accurate, photography took up a lot of my time. A weakness would be me not practicing enough with the tools in Photoshop as my images didn’t edit as well as I would of liked to I will definitely practice on Photoshop so I can benefit my self more in the third year when photographing other work.

5.
Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
  • Manage my time better so I can achieve a higher quality of work in a shorter time.
  •  Proof read thoroughly to avoid spelling mistakes or any spacing.
  • Practice more photography to help me progress and achieve high quality images.
  • Make more mock-ups this will help me have more variation with my work and make it more precise.
  • Try different stocks so I am not limiting my self to certain styles of design.

Summative Evaluation

SUMMATIVE EVALUATION

I enjoyed the 505 module , especially studio brief 2. I felt the whole module was a lot more self directed than any of the other modules and it really put me in a good stead for the third year. Throughout the module it was important that i made sure i made the right design and general decisions as time wasn't as good as past modules because we had so much other work running along side. It was important for me to manage my time.

With studio brief 1 i feel as though my research really informed my final publication and the design choices that i made. I made sure i included informed design decisions throughout boards and my final work. The geometry publication was definitely one of the best pieces of work i produced after careful planning and experimentation the final piece turned out exactly how i wanted. I wouldn't of been able to see the final result until the relevant experimentation had been done , studio brief 1 is a perfect example for me of how beneficial prototypes are.

Studio brief 2 was one of the most challenging briefs i have done i had to photograph every artists name plus vinyl and the titling. I thought it was going to be a lot more straight forward than it actually was it really tested my patience at some points when the lighting wouldn't work and after one of my letters snapped i nearly gave up but i needed to take a step back and take into consideration what i could achieve in the time available. Deciding to rephotograph my work was the most beneficial thing i could of done as i achieved a lot better quality images that perviously.

The module as a whole was stressful as i tried new things but i felt i had learnt from a lot of variables throughout and theres definitely things i will change and expand on in the third year. I feel really confident in the sense i  know i am at a good level to progress on into the third year.

Packaging - Research Book

PACKAGING - RESEARCH BOOK

For the packaging for my 16 page publication i decided to create some kind of folded envelope that would package my publication in a secure but simple way.

From my initial ideas i decided to start my envelope with my first idea. The Blue Print design.

Design-

Possibly stocks i could print on ..

Thin off white paper
Antique White
Parcel Paper-

After looking at the stock i had chosen i decided that the blue ink wouldn't work that well also reflecting back to my blue print research my envelope didn't actually resemble the blue print theme. I realised that blue print is mainly used for actual icons or designs which include measurements just measurements.

I decided to take a step back and reflect on my actual publication and what it was that i was producing and how the packaging would reflect it. As i was creating a maths work/text book it seemed that producing it in a simplistic envelope with a retro theme and minimal text would work really well.

Design -

INSIDE
 FRONT COVER

Text : 'GEOMETRY DESIGN' VOLUME 1

Prototypes-

Sugar Paper stock:

 Antique white -

Parcel Paper-

After testing my publication colour against the parcel paper i knew thats the stock i wanted to use so i began making the envelope using the net i had printed i printed two just be on the safe side.

When i began cutting the envelope i realised that the flap i had put on to the envelope was on the wrong side.

Luckily i had an extra net so i cut off the flap on the other publication and made a flap on the right hand page.

 Before sticking together-
Final product -

I am really happy with my final packaging i am glad that i produced prototypes my envelope reflects my publication and was the appropriate solution for my product.

Sign up Tutor Crit 22/04

SIGN UP TUTOR CRIT 22/04

Today i had a crit with Lorraine one and one and asked her some questions about the next studio brief and my existing geometry publication. Firstly asking her about studio brief 2 i mentioned how i wanted to have installations with cut out work featured for information and way finding and also advertising. As spoken to Lorraine previously we have agreed everything should be designed with a reason behind it. Lorraine told me about a recent exhibition were people have made up shapes by calculating how good they were at certain modules which has inspired me to find a way i can come up with an icon shape using my content and theme.

Moving on to the next part of the crit i spoke to Lorraine about my publication she said it works well and helped me have a look through and notice where i had certain spaces and things weren't lined up. i explained about where i was using the tru grain and why i used the certain designs i had. I next asked about my binding method because i really wanted to make sure it was going to turn out how i had planned and needed some guidance.

Lorraine suggested i change my binding method as when i come to the end of the production i probably won't be happy if i use a black spiral bind as it resembles the aesthetics of a dissertation and it doesn't look as professional. We spoke about how math books usually have a stronger stock on the outside and then a different inside and there usually bound with staples or saddle stitch. Although it was suggested i could use a silver spiral bind but it might rip the tru grain so i need to consider these points.

What i will do next-

  • Test both of these binding methods.
  • Look at the strength of tru grain before production.
  • Spell check & get my publication proof read by more than two people.
Studio brief 2
  • Look at more installations & further creative advertising
  • Look at the geometry behind individual shapes to represent my concept.
I am really glad i had this chat with Lorraine i will now consider things i didn't before and she made some really valid points i will take on board. Ive made a small to do list so i can make sure everything i have spoke about today gets implemented throughout my research and my design.

Product , Range & Distribution - Progress Crit Feedback

PRODUCT , RANGE & DISTRIBUTION - PROGRESS CRIT FEEDBACK

QUESTIONS I ASKED-

Publication-

  • Are the colours used in my publication appropriate? Do they work as a set?
  • Do the designs and grids clearly relate & demonstrate the certain topic?
  • I have decided to print it A4 would that be to big?

Product range & distribution-

  • Would a 3d installation work well for my branding?
  • Any printing/experimental methods that would be appropriate apart from laser cutting?

 MY FEEDBACK-

1

  • Publication  Q1 - Yes the colours work well as a set, think its ready print.
  •  Publication  Q2 -I think a4 would be a suitable size to help demonstrate the work. Think it would have to be perfectly bound to give it some structure.
  • Studio brief 2 Q1- A instillation would work well , the repeat pattern especially.
  • Studio brief 2 Q2- Screen print with florescent inks would maybe be interesting
2
  • Studio brief 2 Q1-  What will the 3d element  represent? why is it needed? its hard to judge? whether it will work without knowing the full reasoning behind it?
  • Studio brief 2 Q2-  Die cutting , 3d printing , Paper crafting ( with knife )
3
  • Publication  Q1 - Yes colours work great!
  • Studio brief 2 Q1- You could try a projected installation , bouncing off the walls and spinning
  • Studio brief 2 Q2- vinyl.

  • Publication  Q1 - Yes i do think they work well together
  •  Publication  Q2 - yes they demonstrate each topic very well , A4 will be a good size to see detail of patterns.
  • Studio brief 1 Q2-  Big vinyl for the exhibition.

MOST COMMON ANSWERS-
  • The questions i asked about my publication everyone agreed that it was appropriate and that the colour choices work and the paper size was suitable.
  • For studio brief 2 people suggested , die cutting , vinyl & paper craft.
  • For studio brief 2 - Consider styles of installation and if its appropriate.

DE-BRIEFED-

Lorraine de-briefed us and i made some notes-
  •  More mockups should be brought to crits.
  • Take a step back if your not sure about feedback given have another read your might agree with what they're saying and realise they do have a point.
  • Make a to do list of what you have to do next

To do list-
  • Start experimenting with laser cutting, die cutting & vinyl
  • Look at different types of installations apart from 3D
  • Look at projected installations
  • Create mockups and hand drawn sketches (initial ideas)
  • Begin designing.
FILM POSTER

After the break we began looking at everyones movie posters as a group there were some amazing work that had been produced for the submission and everyone had really took time to plan out and design there final outcomes.

I am really glad we have the opportunity to produce a poster for alternative movie poster website and i would love to do this brief next year for responsive.

Work for Progression Crit 22/04

WORK FOR PROGRESSION CRIT - 22/04

As we had a progression crit i decided to put together some boards in preparation. The first board i put brief across so people could fully understand my concept & what mandatory requirements i will need to fulfil to complete the brief to the highest standard.

I also produced a board that features branding considerations such as creative business branding , interactive invitations and focusing on laser cutting & pattern design.

I added images that represented what i wanted to produce.
I produced another board that shows how i want to incorporate installations in to my work such as 3d installations that will be featured on the walls in my exhibition for information and way finding also signage.
I made a board to show the creative advertising i have looked at and how i want to make sure i show and develop a well thought out plan and concept that best showcases my work in a clever way.

At this stage i have completed my publication for OUGD505 so i decided to have that displayed also to receive some feedback and i wanted to know if my colours were appropriate and also my choice over stock and paper size.

For the crit i also had my poster to show , i feel although i have a substantial about of work to be looked at although i wish i had more design work for studio brief 2 , My next step is to begin making a to list for studio brief 2 for what i need to do next.
