Type Session 2

TYPE SESSION 2

Kerning - The space between two letters.

Definition- In typography, kerning (less commonly mortising) is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning adjusts the space between individual letter forms, while-tracking (letter-spacing) adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters. In a well-kerned font, the two-dimensional blank spaces between each pair of characters all have similar area. The related term kern denotes a part of a type letter that overhangs the edge of the type block.

Never reduce any of the spacing between letters ( negative kerning). The spacing should only ever be increased.

We next tried kerning ourselves in indesign spelling out our names in capitals in san serif.

My name before kerning.
I added kerning spaces between the letters that looked too close together such as the 'R' 'I' 'A'

We next looked at how to break a sentence up.

We agreed the best way to break up a sentence is to use a comma to have a pause or a break.

Hierarchy - a system in which members of an organization or society are ranked according to relative status or authority.

We read top to bottom - The next thing we got asked to do was type out:

FOUR
THREE
TWO
ONE

To create what will be read first i decided to arrange it by decreasing the point size so one was read first

We next put some text into a full document into indesign so we could have a look at it in place to see how easy or difficult it was to read.
  • We have to reduce the size of the type
  • Kerning
We next put our text into columns i decided to justify mine so i became orderly and looked neater.

  • Its better two have two columns than have three
  • Two is easier to read
  • 10 to 12 numbers is maximum words on a lines

Type Session 6.2.14

TYPE SESSION

Today we had a type session with Graham he first began the session by discussing some basic type history.

We discussed as a group
  • Internet - Revolution
  • There will be a bigger revolution
Type Terminology (notes)

  • William Massey

  • We looked at the type terminology of the letters
  • We discussed the 'shape of the word you read'
  • Classification / Linotype
  • Black Letter - Gothic Hand written
  • Decorative pictorial - Hand written
  • Roman nineteenth century vernacular
  • Construction
  • Shape proportion
  • Modelling
  • Weight
  • Terminations
  • Key Characteristics
We did two small tasks in the session the first was use a typeface we had chosen to best represent ourselves.

I chosen BEBAS NEUE and made it bold i like to think i am a confident person and loud i think this font represents that yet its still approachable and not to harsh.

The second task we were assigned a job title and asked to make a business card using type to best describe our role. My job title was 'Window Cleaner'  I decided to use a large bubble like typeface to represent soap or water. I wanted the rest of the typefaces on the business card to be playful and approachable as a window cleaner is a manual labourer job.

I found the session really helpful although i already apply appropriate typefaces to my work this session helped me understand the strength of using typefaces alone without imagery or info graphics and the impact they can have.
