Type Session 6.2.14

TYPE SESSION

Today we had a type session with Graham he first began the session by discussing some basic type history.

We discussed as a group
  • Internet - Revolution
  • There will be a bigger revolution
Type Terminology (notes)

  • William Massey

  • We looked at the type terminology of the letters
  • We discussed the 'shape of the word you read'
  • Classification / Linotype
  • Black Letter - Gothic Hand written
  • Decorative pictorial - Hand written
  • Roman nineteenth century vernacular
  • Construction
  • Shape proportion
  • Modelling
  • Weight
  • Terminations
  • Key Characteristics
We did two small tasks in the session the first was use a typeface we had chosen to best represent ourselves.

I chosen BEBAS NEUE and made it bold i like to think i am a confident person and loud i think this font represents that yet its still approachable and not to harsh.

The second task we were assigned a job title and asked to make a business card using type to best describe our role. My job title was 'Window Cleaner'  I decided to use a large bubble like typeface to represent soap or water. I wanted the rest of the typefaces on the business card to be playful and approachable as a window cleaner is a manual labourer job.

I found the session really helpful although i already apply appropriate typefaces to my work this session helped me understand the strength of using typefaces alone without imagery or info graphics and the impact they can have.
