Tiger Print Brief - Evaluation

TIGER PRINT SUBMISSION/EVALUATION

'I have produced five designs that reflect a floral and geometric theme I have been inspired by current trends on the M&S website. I have used geometric design in my work for a more contemporary take on traditional surface patterns.'

EVALUATION

The tiger print pattern brief requires you to design up to five different pattern designs the were aloud to be any type of repeat pattern or placement print. When i first found this brief i was really pleased i love pattern design and using monochrome themes so i re-wrote the brief straight away and began experimenting.

I designed 3 floral patterns and 2 more structured geometric patterns. Although i did floral designs they still have a geometric structure. I really enjoyed doing this brief as i needed a bit of inspiration i began researching into current trends product and packaging they uses pattern design i came across a lot of real well branded collateral i made a blog post to document what i found and why i liked it.

I didn't really have any problems throughout this brief as i had a lot of work going on at the same time i did execute this brief fairly quickly but i am still really pleased with my outcomes. I think geometric design and pattern making is a strength of mine and this was the perfect brief for me to widen my style of briefs throughout responsive as some of my other briefs have just been branding it was nice to just do a brief souly on pattern design.

I  feel doing this brief has given me the ability to make quick decisions and suitable variations when producing repeat patterns. One of the most positive things i gained from this brief was finding about the company ‘Tiger Print’ they have many briefs that run all the time so i would like to make  a point of entering them even when responsive submission is over so i have more experience in entering a wide variety of different briefs.

This has been one of my favorite briefs and im really pleased i entered it and that my work was displayed on there website.

Project Management - OUGD505

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Over the past week we have been briefed twice and had presentations. After checking e studio when we get back after easter we have 3 submissions close and another submission just before we leave i felt it would be appropriate to go through my calendar see when we are free and book some print slots.

I also want to print my poster for studio brief 3 on a appropriate stock and with a high quality finish so i booked a print slot for that also.

I wanted to be as organised as possible so i have decided to start using my notes on my mac to document all print slots and photography so every things documented and there to refer to. I will book another slot for my exhibition work and printed collateral so i have a backup print slot just incase & more time if i have any extra things to print.

Tiger Print brief - Designs

TIGER PRINT BRIEF DESIGNS

PATTERN #1

For my pattern i took inspiration from a geometric pattern on some branding i was looking at. I have combined a floral & geometric theme. To create the initial flower i used a circle and a tear drop. I used the tear drop to place around the circle shape and made the angle -32 degree. Pressing cmd + D made the tear drop shape rotate around my centre point.

For this style i used hexagon by column & row.

Variation 1:

For a more structured finish i used tile type - Grid

Variation 2:
I used Hex by row again for this style but enlarged the flowers.

Variation 3:
I used brick by row for this style but enlarged the flowers again.

Variation 4:
The four designs together:

After looking at my flower/geometric patterns i am really pleased but i feel although the larger one looks although it has to much negative space so I've tried to inverted it and tried using more black.

I played around with my original shape and then changed and then began testing patterns.
I first tried the flower with the black leaves with the shape very small i really liked this pattern but i felt it was a little to heavy.

I felt it looked a lot better bigger but still a little heavy so i decide to invert it.

I then tried it with the the black circle in the middle instead of white and it worked a lot better. There was less heavy colour and the pattern was still clear and concise. Im really happy with this design and will use it for one of my finals.

PATTERN #2

For this set of variations i have began by making a hexagon shape combining them with other hexagons i also tried to incorporate a floral theme within the shapes.

Variation 1:

PATTERN #3

PATTERN #4

FINALS FOR SUBMISSION:

As it was an option to submit 5 designs i decided to use 2 designs from pattern #1 as i couldn't decide out of the two.

I feel as though i have variation through the 5 designs and I'm pleased with the outcomes. I wanted to achieve some floral designs as well and geometric and combined.

Tiger Print brief & Concept

The Details:
We would like your design in black and white, anything with colour will not be accepted.

Your design could be a repeat pattern or a placement print. You may choose to use your favourite method of working or a combination of mediums such as:

As always, we’d like you to keep the Marks and Spencer customer in mind. The final design must have a commercial feel that will appeal to men & women. Our everyday range is on display now, so why not pop in to your local store or go online and take a look at what we currently do.
