Studio Workshop Design for print part 2 - 8.10.13

STUDIO TASK DESIGN PRODUCTION - Our print findings

We got back into groups we were in this morning and we put all of our print examples we were told to collect last week we put them all out on the table and put them into groups.

We put them into category examples for print we had -
  • Packaging
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Leaflets
  • Business Cards
  • Clothing tags
  • Posters
  • Flyers
  • Photo on assitate
  • Card
  • CD
  • Lampshade (hand crafted)

One colour - we picked to assort our objects into one colour on stock. eg the pandora bag had black ink on a white bag.

Two colour- For two colours we had two colours plus stock.

Mass produced-
We were asked to put our items that were mass produced together. Mass produced means to manufacture large quantities. these things would of been re-produced for selling and advertising.

Short run- Short run things were things that maybe local flyers so they wouldn't of printed thousands.

Bespoke-
These items there would of only been one of them made or a very little amount.

PROCESSES WE HAD

This list is images we took for groups we created with processes we had.

Screen print
These items had been screen printed , i didn't realise that you could screen print for mass production , eg like the urban outfitters bag. I think screen printed packaging leaves a really good finish.
Laser cut-
These items were laser cut , the card has the tiniest detail.
Spot varnish-
These items were spot varnished mainly magazines in this group.

Digital-
These were digitally produced examples.

Monoprint-
This letter has been mono printed onto a piece of card.
Embossed-
We all though this magazine was really cleverly produced with the shiny cover and heavy embossing.
WHY?
We spoke about target audiences and why things are packaged they way they are I looked further at -

We looked at galaxy packaging and tried to look at why it looked the way it did and who its audience was. At first we all said galaxy is for all chocolate lovers! After further discussion we realised its for women its a luxurious brand that is still affordable , in comparison a child would chose a fredo over a galaxy bar.
The packaging has changed over the years but always with an italic flowing type. The type is like melted chocolate  Its a treat but not like a more expensive brand you would maybe by once a month you could afford this on a day to day.

I looked at pandora next and i realised although its a girly jewellery brand it is so popular and big because of the cost pandora isn't as expensive as other jewellers. The packaging is white and minimal although its a girly / women brand its not pink and over powering its classy and timeless. Its a high end yet affordable product.

I loved this bag i brought in to use as an example i didn't realise you could screen print for mass production .  When taking about this later in discussion i realised that the bag itself would of cost next to noting to produce yet the products this store sells are expensive. Its a global brand that sells more quirky clothing i love the branding and design for this bag and think it works. It reminds me of the fair and candy sweet bags.

Penultimate task -

We had to group our things into these four categories
  • Branding & Identity
These examples fall under branding and identity.

  • Packaging & Promotion
These examples are for packaging and promotion eg. flyers posters and bags.

  • Information & Way finding
These examples were picked for information and way finding because there are receipts, instructions and booklets
  • Publishing & Editorial
These magazines and books were used for publishing and editorial examples.
