Web session 1 & study task 4

WEB - GETTING STARTED
Briefing -
Part 1
Your Design for web brief is asking you to design a web site using existing material / content. Within this session you are being asked to identify the following:

Task -
  •  What is your subject matter ?  Leif Podjasky - focussing album artwork
  •  What are you trying to communicate? I am still unsure of my final decision but i want my website to be    an archive to portrait my chosen subject this will be the best way to also get across my design aesthetic.
  •  Who will be / could be your audience or ‘end-user’? My audience will be design students an music lovers - but i need to define my concept more to secure i more specific audience.
  • What will be the most appropriate / effective form of content? - I want to use a lot of imagery and use links for images. I definitely want my website to be minimalist and easy to navigate.
  •  What is the function & Purpose? The purpose and function is to make people aware of what album art there is and be an online resource.
What ‘sector’ / Industry you would be designing for (For example):
  •   Pharmaceutical
  •   Health & Wellbeing
  •   Sport & fitness
  •   Music Industry
  •   Travel & Tourism
- The sector i would be designing for would be art & design and possibly music.

Part 2
Begin to gather ideas how you can articulate your ideas into a workable informal brief, basically your telling us what you aim to design, why, when for and how.

BRIEF

'For my website i will create an innovative online resource for design students to know the history about Leif Podjaksy & Album art . I will create a website using imagery for links but making sure i create this in the best possible way i will do so by making it accessible and easy to use by a wider audience.
I will take into consideration colour typography and the skills to create unusual navigation  I want my website to portrait simplistic style yet be engaging i will thoroughly go through the different methods of research to make sure my website has the most appropriate content and a high standard.'

What is already out there on the web? You will research your chosen area of exploration. Gather as much information on existing design, design thinking and consumer needs etc.… that will help you to produce the best design for web representation you can.
Before any designing can be done, you will need to research using some of these methods:
Qualitative Research
Qualitative research is a type of research conducted to establish the audience’s beliefs, feelings, motivations and triggers. Results are often rich in insights.
Quantitative Research
Quantitative research is a type of research that provides valid data. It’s all about the numbers. Insights can be difficult at times, as quantitative research requires analysis to identify trends.
Primary Research
Primary research is new, not old, information.
Secondary Research
Secondary research is research performed on old data. E.g. New analysis on data gathered last year.
Segmentation
You hear a lot about ‘Market Segmentation’. It means the market of the product, or service, is segmented into groups. Those groups, or segments, represent a part of the customer group or audience. They are usually grouped by demographics such as sex, age, ethnicity, income, occupation etc.
Focus Groups
Focus groups are moderated group discussions whose participants are selected to accurately represent the audience or customer.
Visual Research
Visual research is the gathering of visual information, stuff that a designer will find useful in solving the problem. Visual research is generally the domain of the designer, or the project team, rarely the client.
You are required to print off 5 of what you consider to be the best designs and bring in to next weeks session.
THE SESSION

In the session we got into small groups and discussed our brief topic and made small mind maps
We were told to completely get all the information in our minds on to paper.

I really struggled at first because i wasn't sure which direction i wanted to take my summer brief , i am really looking forward to creating a website and i want to make sure my topic for the website is something really engaging.

I next started with the more obvious sub sections :

DESIGN STYLE
  • photo manipulation
  • hidden meaning
  • illustration
  • Creative design
WHO?
  • australian
  • graphic designer
  • illustrator

These sub sections weren't getting me anywhere so i decided to try and dig deeper and think about what i think of when i think of his design.

I started branching off on different sub sections of my summer brief topic ( Leif Podhajsky) -

Album Art
  • Foals
  • Tame Impala
  • Music style
  • Psychedelic
  • Alternative
Which led me to reflect on this album art which i originally found Leif Podhajsky from it as he is the designer.

  • colours
  • clouds
  • symetry - i couldn't see the symmetry until i had really analysed the image.
  • geometry
  • repeition
  • complimentary colours
  • sprials
  • fractals
I kept coming back to shapes so i wrote down what i thought about when i first think of the word shape -

SHAPES
  • light defusing
  • mirrors
  • colour
  • reds warms
  • pattern
  • optical illusion
  • psychedelic
This list led me to psychedelic -

PSYCHEDELIC
  • LCD
  • Led Zeplin
  • Kaledisocpe
  • 70's
  • music
  • symetry
  • drugs
  • woodstock
  • nirvana
WOODSTOCK
  • Festival
  • community
  • people
  • music
  • drugs
  • hippies
  • art
  • biggest festival
  • flares
  • culture
After all my sub section the three things i kept coming back to were

MUSIC , GEOMETRY , PSYCHEDELIC.

CHANGING MY CONCEPT -

Lorraine helped me to try and analyse the sub sections more and after more thought into geometry i decided to think more about symmetry and to do a bit of research in Fractal shapes. I will further research into my sub sections before making any decision  for a concept as i wouldnt want to miss out on anything during the thought process.
