CANON & GRIDS

CANON & GRIDS
  • A gridded page is much like scaffolding for a building
  • It is structured elements that can be
  • The van de graaf canon is a historical reconstruction of a method that may have been used in a book design to divide a page in pleasing proportions
  • The construction of van de graafs canon, works for any page width:height ratio
symmetrical layouts is done for a reason so that your fingers don't cover the words on the pages.

Asymmetrical layout - eye can read right across and absorb. Easier for the reader & aesthetically pleasing.

Historian John Man suggests that Gutenberg's bible page was based on the golden ratio.

Octavo Format - The text area and margin proportions and determined by the starting page proportions.

With the layout we were asked to produce last lesson we used the v
an de graaf canon technique to divide our page up into symmetrical proportions.
LEADING

Column width is more than just design or format - its also based on legibility

printed collateral (text) is read by the eye of a distance of 30-35cm

According to empirical rule there should be 7 words per line for a text of any length

To keep the type area light and open (in appearance) we must consider the leading

i.e the vertical distance from the line to the line which suits the side of the type.

Width of a column -
Column widths with 12 point san serif 14 point leading A column is easy to read if it is wide enough to fit in average 10 words per line.

MARGINS
Margins can have a influence on the overall feel of a page of print

We were asked to sketch up some layouts for single page spreads with large and small margins to see what they looked like. We made each layout different to get more of a variety..
For the set task we were asked to make out layouts digital and have a look at some other layout designs and combine them.

After some research and playing round with layouts i do think that it is all about aesthetics , i much prefer large images and margins that are different sizes rather than everything being symmetrical. The make the page more appealing and rather than structured.
